Chesterfield school board approves new contract for Superintendent

CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - Chesterfield's school board voted, unanimously, to approve a new, four year contract for its superintendent.

The new contract will take effect at the end of the week and doesn't include a pay raise. Dr. Newsome's salary will remain at just over $207,000 a year.

The school board chairman says with student pass rates and graduation rates reaching all time highs, despite budget cuts -- they wanted to lock in Dr. Newsome for four more years.

"One thing that school divisions don't want is a superintendent turning over every three or four years. Somebody comes in, has a few ideas, does a few things, then exits. That doesn't bode well for the system," said Dianne Pettitt, Chesterfield School Board Chair.

Dr. Newsome is expected to sign the new contract.
