Powhatan man sentenced to 20 years for murder

POWHATAN, VA (WWBT) - The man found guilty in a Powhatan murder was sentenced to 20 years in prison for second-degree murder in the stabbing death of Rashad Brown.

Dennis Merchant Jr., 20, received an 18-year sentence for the charge of second-degree murder and two counts of use of a weapon in the commission of a felony, which each carry a one-year sentence. Merchant also stabbed Shawn Johnson during the fight.

Merchant was convicted in February of second degree murder for the stabbing of Rashad Brown on May 13, 2010.
