DINWIDDIE, VA (WWBT) - Exciting news for sports fans, Dinwiddie County has a new athletic complex that's expected to generate big crowds and big money.
The grand opening of the Dinwiddie County Sports Complex took place Monday evening. After nearly 5 years and $2.9 million, the first phase of the complex is finally finished.
It's a landscape Dinwiddie resident, Deborah Jensen, says is long overdue.
"It's exciting because we haven't had anything like this in our county," said Jensen.
There are 4 baseball fields. A football field and a soccer field. A combination the county was lacking.
"When you think about it Dinwiddie didn't have a lit football field or a lit soccer field. Our baseball facilities were inadequate. So this was built to take care of all those people," said Brian Mancini, Director of Dinwiddie Parks and Recreation.
The complex will be used by school athletic teams and local recreational teams. Right now, Karl Frazier's co-ed softball team practices on a field outside of the county -- but that will change.
"We can just come here and not waste gas," said Frazier.
The complex is also expected to generate revenue for the county.
"We'll rent the facility to travel baseball and softball tournaments - things like that or anything we feel can bring an economic boost to the county," said Mancini.
The complex isn't complete just yet. Phase 2 of the construction project will consist of basketball courts, tennis courts, and walking trails.
The county calls the complex a magnetic marketing tool.
"Once we get all done this will be one of the nicest facilities in central Virginia. In a way it puts Dinwiddie County on the map in terms of recreational facilities," said Mancini.
A timeline for the second and final phase of the construction project has not been set. The first game at the complex is scheduled for this weekend.
