Rain foils Southside's Opening Night

MIDLOTHIAN, VA (WWBT) - Southside Speedway was finally ready to open for the summer.  But Mother Nature was not going to permit it.

The rain threatening Southside Speedway Friday afternoon prevailed an hour and a half before the first green flag laps of the season. The summer racing season will kick off next Friday, June 24. Six races are scheduled in memory of founder J.M. Wilkinson.

Racing starts at 7:30 p.m. with the Kart division. The Late Model division will run the feature 75-lap race with 2010 division champion Chris Dodson set to defend his title. Also running will be the Kart, Legend, Grand Stock, U-Car, and Street Stock divisions.

In March, Southside announced that it had put it entire schedule on hold, as owner/promoter Sue Clements recovered from a stroke.  At the end of April, Clements said she was healthy enough to run a limited schedule of 10 events.
