Update: delays dissipate after crews patch hole in I-95

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - There was no way around the traffic nightmare on I-95 Friday during the middle of rush hour and into the night. A hole in the roadway was to blame.

"It was just something that could not be avoided," said VDOT Spokesperson Dawn Eischen.

Crews worked into the night to patch the hole. All lanes re-opened shortly after 3:00 Saturday morning.

"A bridge joint failed and what that means is the area just to the south of the bridge, the pavement on either side of where the bridge meets the pavement just crumbled," she said.

Construction crews were immediately called in to make the emergency repairs slowing traffic in three lanes down to just one.

"No way we could put a cone and have people go around it. This wouldn't be a safe situation for any of the drivers. We had to immediately go in and make repairs," Eischen said.

The interstate was backed up for nearly eight miles during rush hour. Friday night traffic was still just crawling.

We're told a couple people actually damaged their cars in the hole before crews were able to begin the necessary work. So far we haven't heard of any serious injuries.

"This is going to continue into the evening so there's going to be one lane of traffic through the night," said Eischen.
