HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - Mulch serves several purposes-it holds in moisture and regulates temperatures. It keeps weeds out and feeds the soil. A truck full of mulch costs about $30 and most yards will need more than one load. But thanks to your local landfill, you'll never have to pay for mulch again.
"We give away everything we can produce and more," said Steve Yob with Solid Waste and Recycling.
Henrico County wants you to come take it. County residents bring their yard waste to the Springfield Landfill where it is ground into useable mulch. The mulch then is loaded into a self loading hopper. With the push of a button, landscapers fill their trucks and trailers to the brim.
"It's very nice mulch," said Jonathan Cauthorn. "Something like that is at least a hundred, hundred fifty bucks at least."
This recycling program has been around for more than ten years and plays a major role in extending the life of the landfill.
"Our landfill takes in 80-100,000 tons of garbage each year. We recycle 50,000 tons of yard waste; keep it out of the landfill, that's almost half of what we put in the landfill," Yob said.
Plus you don't have to live in Henrico to take their mulch. If you want to get your hands on free mulch and want to stay a little closer to home, you're in luck. Each jurisdiction in our area offers this kind of service.
Richmond offers free mulch at the East Richmond Road Landfill. Call ahead and they can have a pay loader ready to help. Chesterfield County has it at the Southside Landfill on Route 10. If you need help loading it, Friday is the day you should go.
Henrico's mulch is available to the public. Richmond and Chesterfield require residency and you might want to call to check availability. Most other transfer stations in our area offer this recycling program.
