Driver charged in fatal South Richmond bus accident

Press release from Richmond Police

RICHMOND, VA - This morning, Richmond Police investigators filed a traffic charge against a Richmond Public Schools bus driver in connection with a fatal vehicle accident last month.

Nathanial Lewis, 60, of the 6800 block of Carnation Street, was issued a summons for failure to yield the right of way, and released.

At approximately 3:30 p.m. on May 10, officers responded to a collision between the school bus Lewis was driving and a sport utility vehicle at the intersection of Belmont Road and West Belmont Road.

Karl Anthony McClendon, 46, of the 1700 block of Jacquelin Street, a passenger in the SUV, died at the scene. The driver of that vehicle and four other passengers, ranging in age from infant to adult, suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Neither Lewis, nor the six students on the bus, was injured.

After in-depth investigation, the Department's Crash Team determined that Lewis was attempting to turn left onto Belmont Road northbound from West Belmont Road when he collided with the SUV, which was traveling southbound on Belmont Road.

NOTE: According to Richmond Public Schools, Lewis is still employed with the school system.
