Investigators: Child's hand pushed in hot soup

CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - A 9-month old baby girl severely scalded and Chesterfield Police say her father is to blame.

He's in custody and according to court documents, the arrest has been four months in the making.

According to doctors who examined the child, this burn was no accident.

Manuel Mejia, 29, of Chesterfield County, is in jail for felony abuse and neglect of a child.

Police suspect the child's hand was pushed into boiling hot soup on the stove.

The incident report suggests this happened on February 18 of this year and it has taken almost four months for the medical files to be reviewed -- and for the Commonwealth's Attorney's Office to process the case.

A trial date for Mejia has been set for July 1.
