Proposal for new City Jail under budget by $18M

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - An update on a proposal for a new City Jail in Richmond.

The construction group Mayor Dwight Jones is recommending for the project says it can build a new jail for just over $116 million.

That's $18 million less than the city budgeted.

Jones is recommending Tompkins/Ballard for the new jail, which would be built at the current location, next to the current jail in the city's East End.

The mayor is asking city council to take a vote on the project by the end of July.
