MECHANICSVILLE, VA (WWBT) - The fifth time was the charm for the Lee-Davis softball team. This weekend at Westfield High School, the Confederates brought home the school's first ever softball state championship, after losing the title game four times previously.
One run was all it took to get L-D the biggest softball win in school history. Senior Taylor Melton scored the only run of the game, and that was enough for Gatorade State Softball Player of the Year Kelly Heinz. The pitcher threw a complete game shutout, striking out 16, and smothering Battlefield in the 1-0 victory.
Some of the players returned to school Monday for exams, and those that had tests said they were welcomed back as heroes at school. The Confederates were the first Central Region team to win a softball state championship since Varina in 1997.
