Bus driver in deadly accident in court Wednesday

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - The driver involved in the deadly bus crash on I-95 will face a judge for a third time.

37-year-old Kin Yiu Cheung is hoping to walk out of jail and see his family without handcuffs for the first time since Friday — that's when he was charged with four counts of involuntary manslaughter.

Last Friday, Cheung walked into the courthouse only facing a reckless driving charge, but he walked out in handcuffs, facing those new charges.

Cheung told investigators he was tired while driving the bus from North Carolina to New York City.

He dozed off, fell asleep, and when he woke up, he turned the bus hard to the left, flipping the bus over.

Four people died. Dozens were injured.

Other passengers said they saw Cheung drink several Red Bulls and coffee and that he told someone on the phone he was tired and didn't have much turn-around time before the crash.

Wednesday's hearing is set for 10:30 a.m.
