Fire destroys home, damages another

HANOVER, VA (WWBT) – There was a massive house fire in Mechanicsville Monday night. The fire broke out around 7:30 p.m. in the 7300 block of Highlander Place - just off Walnut Grove Road. One home was destroyed another damaged. Neighbors were out here just as the fire broke out and capture video on their cell phones.

Looking at this home video from NBC12 viewer Sydnie Meadows, it's hard to believe someone could actually make it out alive. The flames were intense. Almost every neighbor was on the phone with 911.

"The heat was tremendous coming from it. We were standing in the front yard and you could feel it. I mean it was a tremendous amount of heat," said neighbor Tim Schools.

It started in the garage of the Jeter family home. Neighbors tell us the son was working on his truck when it caught fire. That fire quickly spread to the rest of the home and the house next door.

"You can still see his pickup truck in the garage but it was engulfed. I mean the whole garage was engulfed and things were just exploding," Tim said.

"I'm sorry that that happened," said Lizzy Schools.

Lizzy Schools and her father watched this scene in horror as they waited for firefighters to arrive. While they were able to put the fire out, at least one home suffered significant damage.

"The one right behind me is probably a total loss. The frame is still up but the roofs gone and the garage is gone," said Hanover Fire Department Battalion Chief William Jones.

Thankfully the family was able to make it out safely. They were too shaken up to go on camera.

Fire crews expect to be out here for some time. This road, Highlander Place is closed to through traffic.
