Amanda Brady's parents talk about field dedication

HENRICO, VA (WWBT) -- The former Henrico school teacher killed in a boating accident last summer on the Rappahannock River will have a ball field dedicated in her memory this weekend, next to the school at which she used to teach.

This is all happening on Saturday at Longan Elementary School in Henrico's West End.

It's been about a year since that tragic accident on the Rappahannock River that killed Amanda Brady. The community at Longan Elementary and in Western Henrico has come together to renovate the field and soon the temporary sign will come down and soon the field will be dedicated in the memory of Amanda Brady.

Fun. Caring. Loving. And always willing to help. That's what Amanda Brady's parents think of when they remember their daughter.

"For a 25-year-old, the amount of people that she touched was amazing," says Lawrence Brady, Amanda's dad.

Whether it was coaching softball at Tucker High, or teaching here at Longan elementary for three years, "Just a lot of pride that we had a daughter that was so special," says Lawrence.

So special, a memorial garden is nearing completion at Longan. Then, on Saturday -- a ball field will be dedicated to her.

After about a year of planning -- new landscaping and all -- the field will officially become Brady Field.

Longan School PTA member Augusta Jarvis spearheaded the idea. "For us to be able to do Brady Field, it's like letting her legacy continue through Longan, the students and the community."

A field for everyone to use and a moment of pride for Amanda's parents.

It all comes about a year of healing day by day, following the horrific accident on the Rappahannock. Amanda was engaged to Patrick Nixon, who was also on the boat. Patrick survived.

"We are healing as a family and they are our family so we are just going through all this together," says Christine Brady, Amanda's mom.

Everyone will come together this weekend to remember the Brady's "Angel in the Outfield."

There will be a wooden sign placed in a flower bed on Saturday that will let everyone know the field is for Amanda Brady.

The dedication will start at 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon at the ball field next to Longan Elementary, located at 9200 Mapleview Avenue in Henrico.

Amanda's sister will be singing the national anthem. Amanda's former friends, softball players and others will take part in a game on Saturday afternoon after the dedication.
