HOPEWELL, VA (WWBT) - Dr. John Clay is helping his patients with TMJ syndrome at Primary Health Group-Hopewell.
TMJ is one of the most common causes of facial pain in young people. It often involves one-sided pain worsened with chewing. It may be mistaken for a headache or earache.
TMJ is often self-limited and alleviated by over the counter anti-inflammatory drugs, jaw exercises, and use of a bite plate at nighttime.
If the pain is unbearable or if it occurs in patients over 50, there is a potential severe vascular problem occurring that must be ruled out.
