High school District tourney champs crowned

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - The four districts in the Richmond area crowned their tournament champions Thursday night, and set up the teams that will be playing in next week's region playoffs at The Diamond.

In the Colonial Championship at Deep Run High School, the home town Wildcats knocked off the top seed Mills Godwin 10-1.  Both the Cats and the Eagles, as regular season champions, will play next week at the Diamond.

In the Central Championship at Matoaca High School, the home team was once again triumphant.  The second seeded Warriors beat fourth seeded Prince George 10-4. The Royals had knocked off previously undefeated Dinwiddie in the semifinals.  The Generals and the Warriors will play at the Diamond next week.

In the Dominion Championship at Cosby High School, the top-seeded Titans remained dominant, beating up James River 12-2.  Cosby scored five runs in the bottom of the first and did not look back, in beating the second seeded Rapids. Both teams will play in the region playoffs.

And at Hanover High School, Atlee finished off the sweep of both Capital District titles, beating third-seeded Lee-Davis 4-1.  The Raiders broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning with a run on a pass ball, and then a two run single from Brent West.  The Confederates knocked off the host Hanover in the semifinals, and will join Atlee in the region playoffs.
