Fighting crime with new smart phone app

CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - You can now help fight crime in your neighborhood with your smart phone! Chesterfield Crime Solvers now has an app for tipsters.

The software for the new app is designed to protect your identity. You can send text, pictures and even communicate with investigators about crimes, and people wanted by police.

They're considered armed, dangerous, and on this night, still on the run. Fugitives wanted by Chesterfield Crime Solvers. Their arsenal includes text message, web tips and now smart phone technology.

"Smart phones seem to be the in thing right now so we were very happy to see that TipSoft created this application to download on to your smart phone," said Chesterfield Police Detective Adrian Otero.

The new, free app for IPhones and Droids is called "TipSubmit". Here's how it works. Open the app and follow the prompts. Type in the who, what, where, when and why! Everything investigators would need to crack a case.

"They can just simply give a location of where that person, or that crime is likely occurring, or at, and it'll plug in the coordinates for you," said Det. Otero.

You can also upload a photo, either one you've just taken or stored in your phone. To give you an idea of just how fast detectives receive your smart phone tip. We uploaded a picture and it  took about 30 seconds. You may get a text from investigators, but they don't know who you are.

"We don't know a telephone number. We don't know an email address, or anything the tipster is submitting the tip from," said Detective Otero.

Only about a month old, Chesterfield detectives hope it'll be just as successful as other Crime Solvers methods.

"It's out there so we'd like for people to be able to use it," said Detective Otero.

Along with Chesterfield/Colonial Heights Crime Solvers, Metro Richmond Crime Stoppers also uses the app along with authorities in eleven other jurisdictions in Virginia.
