CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) – A woman was robbed in her own driveway in broad daylight and the suspect is still on the loose. The robbery happened Monday in the 7600 block of Whittington Drive, not far from Jahnke Road in Chesterfield.
It was four o'clock in the afternoon when the woman was getting into her car to pull it into the garage. Her quiet day changed in a matter of seconds.
Suddenly a man was next to the car preventing her from closing the door. His only words were, "give me your purse." For some reason and she doesn't know why, she got out of the vehicle. He pushed her several times. When she moved away from the door, he grabbed her bag with a brand new camera and her wallet.
She said it only took a couple of minutes, and then he was running to his parked car down the street.
Neighbors, like Steven Pegram are shocked at the news.
"Something like this in the broad day light is not what I expected by any means," he said. "It is frightening for a lot of people here in the area."
The woman got a good look at the thief who is shattering the neighborhood's sense of security. She noted he is about 5'9", skinny and between 17 and 19 years old. He was wearing an oversized purple baseball hat and purple t-shirt, along with a lime green plastic bracelet. She said she isn't sure of his race.
She also explained police were able to lift some palm prints from the suspect off her car. She described the get-a-way vehicle as a gray, older model, small car.
Pegram has dealt with car break-ins while living on this street, but never thought it would come to this.
"At this point it's not a place that I'm looking forward to being in much longer," he said. "I know that we've talked about moving out of the area."
