Chesterfield store clerk shot during attempted robbery

CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - A gunman opens fire on a Chesterfield convenience store clerk during an attempted robbery. The clerk survived! But the shooter is still on the streets.

Take a look at these surveillance pictures from The Market Place on Jeff Davis Highway. Regulars don't recognize the guy, but will keep an eye out.

The store hasn't been open since the shooting Sunday night. Regulars said they won't be surprised if it closes for good.

One after another, customers swung into The Market Place parking lot, only to have to turn around and leave. Jerry Taylor frequently stops by to check on the clerks. Only on this day, he was met with metal barriers.

"I saw his car here and I knew something was wrong," said Jerry Taylor.

Police want to talk to this man caught on store surveillance cameras late Sunday night. The gunman threatened the clerk if he didn't hand over cash. Taylor said he knows how the clerk would react.

"He would not be confrontational at all," said Taylor.

Regular customers tell me this store has been robbed at least twice this year but never a shooting.

Police said in this case, the gun went off when the man jumped over the counter and started fighting with the clerk. The gun fired twice. The gunman ran off as the clerk lay bleeding waiting for help.

I showed the surveillance photos to regulars, like Taylor. "No, (Don't recognize him?)"

Elfredia Peterson can't place him either.

"(Do you recognize that person), No," said Peterson.

She lives in the apartments behind the store.

"I was a regular customer coming up here, walking up here. Not now," said Peterson.

Peterson said the store beefed up security earlier this year.

"They had cameras but they didn't have as many as they got now," said Peterson.

Taylor said the senseless crime may be the last straw for the owner who worried about someone getting hurt.

"He actually was thinking about closing up," said Taylor.

Police tell me the clerk is expected to make a full recovery. If you recognize the man in the photos, call Crime Solvers at 748-0660.
