Freeman unveils athletics Hall of Fame class

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Former Virginia Tech football star Clarence Nelson and former UVA basketball player Buddy Reams headline the 2011 Douglas Freeman High School Hall of Fame class. The Freeman athletics hall of fame was created in 2009, to honor the best athletes in the school's history.

The following 11 athletes are the 2011 inductees:

BILL WOOD – ‘58.  Co-Captain of the 1957-58 District Champion Basketball team. Upset #1 state ranked team in the State Tournament.

BOBBY GRUBBS – ‘64.  1st Team All-Region & All-State in Football. Lettered in Track & Field.

BUDDY REAMS – ‘64.   All-Metro & All-State in Basketball.  Played basketball at the U of Virginia.

BUZ MINTZ – ‘73. All-District, All-Region, All-Metro, & All-American in Football. All-District in Baseball. 

BRUCE WOODWORTH – ‘78. Lettered 4 years in Football & Wrestling.  All-District, All-Region, All-Metro, All-State in Football.  District Champion, Region Champion, All-State in Wrestling.

CLARENCE NELSON – ‘81. All-District, All-Region, All-Metro, & All-State in Football. Lettered in Basketball.  Lettered in football at Virginia Tech.

MATT MOGEL – ‘91.  2 time District Champion, 2 time Region Champion, 2 time State        Champion in wrestling.  Lettered in baseball.  4 year wrestling starter at Virginia Tech.

SUSAN LARSON – ‘96. Earned 14 varsity letters in Cross-Country, Gymnastics, Softball, &            Indoor Track.  Times-Dispatch Scholar Athlete of the Year. State AAA Female Scholar Athlete of the Year. 1st female collegiate pole vaulter in the state of VA (Wm & Mary).

KEN MOORE – ‘69.  Captained Football & Baseball at Douglas Freeman.  Played Baseball at Wm & Mary.  Asst. coach at Douglas Freeman – Football – 30 years, Baseball – 12 years.        Wrestling – 4 years.  Head Coach – Baseball – 26 years.

RONNIE JONES.  Coached Cross-country – District, Region & State Champions ('69).         Coached Track & Field – District, Region & State Champions ('70).

MARY VIRGINIA MANSON.  Varsity Cheerleading sponsor – 15 years.  #1 Rebel fan during her teaching career at Douglas Freeman.

    Trinity rising senior Armando Bacot helped Team USA's U18 team to a gold medal at the FIBA Americas tournament in Canada this past weekend. Bacot says it was a great learning experience, as he now shifts his focus to his senior year with the Titans.
