CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - 13-year-old Devin Hawkins, who was hit and killed by a stray bullet last month, was honored during a neighborhood sporting event Saturday. The community released dozens of balloons and planted in his memory. It's a somber message spread through a day of community togetherness.
Just last month the young Broadwater Townhomes teen was hit and killed by a bullet meant for someone else. Kenyia Milligan lives next door to Devin's family.
"It's very scary," she said. "I was a little frightened that something like that occurred. It kind of made me want to stay in my house."
We knocked on Devin's mom's door today but she didn't want to talk to us on camera. Milligan says she is beginning to heal because she has a strong support system in her family and the community here. A community that brought her to tears with a photo, filled with messages of love.
The presentation was the culmination of a day of activities and sports the 13-year-old star athlete loved. Marcus Walker organized the event.
"Devin was a very high spirited, happy, carefree young man," he said. "This is perfect for him."
Like many gatherings before, this one comes with a lesson. The suspects arrested in Devin's murder case have been charged with gang participation, alleged members of the Bloods. Milligan hopes this shows violence isn't the answer.
"I think it's important because it will give a lot kids the opportunity to know what's more important in life," said Walker. "It will kind of help them do the right thing."
All three suspects arrested in the case remain behind bars.
