Jury convicts Hamilton of bribery and extortion

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - A former Virginia legislator could spend the next 30 years in prison for bribery and extortion.

A federal jury in Richmond convicted Phillip Hamilton on Wednesday after prosecutors proved he secured a job he helped create with taxpayer money.

The former Newport News Republican secured a half million dollars in taxpayer money to finance a teacher training center at ODU in exchange for a job as the center's director.

He'll be sentenced in August.
