HENRICO, VA (WWBT) – A Lanexa man is behind bars following a Friday night boat crash on the James River.

Christopher A. Parker, 32, of Kenthurst Road in New Kent County, was charged by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries with one misdemeanor count of boating under the influence and two felony counts of maiming.

Eight people were aboard the 20-foot boat when it crashed just before 11 p.m. into a buoy near Osborne Boat Landing in Henrico County. Authorities said five people were hospitalized, including one who required a helicopter lift to VCU Medical Center.

Court papers indicate Parker, "had the odor of alcohol about his person" the night of the crash and stated that he, "had been drinking Bud Lite beers" leading to "watery, glassy, dilated eyes." The papers also state Parker, "was unsteady on his feet, and had issues following directions while operating the boat."

Parker made a brief appearance Monday in Henrico General District Court. He remains in jail and is scheduled for a bond hearing on Tuesday.

Those who were injured in the crash have since been released from the hospital.

When reached by phone, Parker's wife referred all questions to her husband's attorney, Watson Marshall, who did not respond to a message seeking comment.
