ROANOKE, Va. (AP) - A 10-year-old boy is in the hospital after being shot by his uncle while they were turkey hunting in Alleghany County.
Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries officer Wayne Billhimer tells WDBJ-TV in Roanoke that the boy's injuries are serious but not life threatening.
Billhimer says the boy was shot from 40 yards away by a 12-gauge, and the pellets hit him from his left thigh up his shoulder.
The names of the boy and the man have not been released.
They were hunting in the Boiling Spring area of the George Washington National Forest.
The uncle, who police say was properly licensed, has not been charged.
Police say it was not the boy's first time hunting. He killed his first deer last fall.
