Candlelight vigil for senior killed in crash

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Dozens gathered at Manchester High School Monday night to remember a student killed in a car crash over the weekend.

A heart of candles glowed in the night air and tears flowed freely for 17-year-old Avery Spence.

Family and friends gathered around the teen's parking spot to light candles and talk lovingly about the high school senior and avid soccer player.

Spence was killed Sunday when the van she was riding in wrecked in Nottoway County.

Many told us they would miss Spence's big, bright smile the most.

Police say neither speed nor alcohol played a role in the accident, in which five other teens were hurt.

The say the van ran off the road, over corrected, slammed into an embankment and overturned.

Authorities confirm the driver wasn't wearing his seatbelt. He's been charged with reckless driving.
