RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Nine people in south Richmond are without a home after a fire overnight.
It happened at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday in the 100 block of East Broad Rock Road and Lawson Street, just off of Hull Street.
The family says the fire was in the front bedroom and hallway.
Fire crews say there was not a lot of flames inside the home so the fire was put out pretty quickly.
Several of the nine that escaped are kids. The people living in the home have their 78-year-old aunt to thank them for getting everyone out safely, including a family dog.
The family is staying at a local hotel and being helped out by the Red Cross.
Fire fighters are still investigating the exact cause of the fire. They say the smoke detector inside was not working.
The Richmond FD will put in smoke detectors for free. Just call your local fire station for more information.
