NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) - A Virginia Department of Transportation scientist says the agency could save money and help the environment if it composted roadkill.
Bridget M. Donaldson tells The Daily Press that the agency's current disposal methods contain environmental hazards.
Most animal carcasses found on roads are hauled to landfills for disposal. The remainder are buried along the roadside.
Donaldson says bacteria and nutrients released by buried carcasses can reach waterways. Landfills produce methane gas.
The transportation department plans to study composting roadkill.
