Spiders ready for top-ranked UVA

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - The Spiders are riding a hot streak, but they're going to need more than just momentum to upset the top-ranked college baseball team in the entire country.

Richmond heads to Charlottesville to play number one Virginia in a 6 p.m. showdown on Wednesday. After winning just four of their first 16 games, the Spiders have won 15 of 20.  But the entire 2011 season has been one long hot streak for the Cavaliers.  They are an amazing 36-3, and regained the top spot in the country by going 5-0 last week.

What's even more remarkable about this recent hot streak for Richmond is that they're doing it without two of their best player.  Starting pitcher Matt Trent returned this weekend to throw 4+ strong innings in relief after missing the entire season before that.  During the Spiders cold streak, two-way player Jake Mayers was their best player.  But he broke his hand and has missed over a month.  He has a doctor's appointment Friday, and may be cleared to play this weekend.
