DINWIDDIE, VA (WWBT) – We've heard it time and time again, but Margaret Sheffield says it's different when it happens to you.
In those few seconds a lifetime of memories was shattered by Saturday's storms. Dinwiddie county officials tell us 45 homes were damaged, and nine are now condemned.
Rosa Wells' mother still lives on the farm her family has owned for more than fifty years. Like with most tornadoes, the damage is sporadic. Sheffield's home was left untouched, but there's only insurance to cover some of the other destruction.
It's a thought repeated throughout the Dewitt area of Dinwiddie. Trees were snapped like toothpicks, the metal sheets from roofs flew through the air like pieces of paper.
The wounds are fresh one day after the storm, but the resolve is strong.
