Free gas causes traffic problems in Henrico

HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - In an effort to show appreciation to customers and to re-launch a cost-saving fuel campaign between Kroger grocery store and Shell gasoline, Wednesday 140 vehicles received 15 gallons of free gas each.

The Shell gas station at 2707 Williamsburg Road in eastern Henrico county pumped the fuel into vehicles for 90 minutes Wednesday morning.  A few drivers waiting in line, ran out of gas before reaching the fuel station.

Twenty gas station employees were brought in to work the event that started at 11 a.m.

Drivers who were at the tail end of the giveaway and some that had special circumstances received gift cards for free gas since they were unable to take advantage of the giveaway today.

Four dollars a gallon gas is quickly becoming a reality across the country. Illinois just became the fourth state to pass the $4 mark, following Alaska, California and Hawaii.

Here in Richmond, we're not there yet, but we are inching closer to it. You can expect to pay about $3.71 a gallon if you plan on filling up today. That's up two cents from Tuesday.

NBC12 posted to our facebook page [] the location at 10 a.m. Many voiced their displeasure in the event on our facebook page.
