Hanover summer camp changes: Register online starting Tuesday at 6am

HANOVER, VA (WWBT) - The Hanover County Summer Camp Program is very popular, and in the past, parents have even camped out overnight in order to make sure their child gets a spot; that's not necessary this year.

"We want them to be first in line online; essentially, they take it into their own hands by getting up in the morning, staying at home in their pajamas, and log in at 6 in the morning," said Recreation Program Director Marcy Durrer.

The process is similar to online shopping; you just create an account, log in, shop for camp and pay for them. You can actually now sign up for any Hanover Parks and Rec program online, but Tuesday will be the first time it's been an option for summer camp. Organizers are expecting a huge online turnout. Since launching discover recreation in the fall, 40 percent of registrations now come in online.

"They no longer have to come into the office to fill out a registration form; they do it all online, pay by credit card and immediately get that confirmation that they are registered for that program or programs they are interested in," Durrer said.

Another change this year, for an extra fee, you can get an extra hour of camp for your child this summer at cool spring elementary. It's a pilot program Parks and Rec leaders hope to role out at more sites in the future.

"We've been hearing for years and year that people have a hard time getting back to camp at 4:30 to pick up their children," Durrer said.

And if you have middle school aged children, you'll have two fewer options this summer because of scheduled construction.

"For the safety of the participants and the campers and the staff, we are not going to be holding summer camp at Liberty Middle School or Stonewall Jackson Middle School, but we still have a middle school camp program at Chickahominy and Oak Knoll," added Durrer.

If you don't have a computer or just aren't comfortable registering online, don't worry. You can still go to either one of the Hanover Parks and Recreation offices to sign up. To register online, click here.
