HENRICO, VA (WWBT) – The Henrico community is grieving tonight over the loss of a well known business owner. Sonny Thompson, the owner of Bed Crafters, was found shot to death this morning inside of his store on West Broad Street.
His family is not doing too well tonight as the news of his death came as a shock. He had worked at this store he owned for nearly forty years and before his life came to such a tragic end.
"My son gave me a call and said you know something has happened at the store and I came by and the police department was here. It's a sad story for the family members, my brother just passed away," said Sonny's brother, Bruce Thompson.
Thompson's brother tells us Sonny had owned the business for 39 years since 1972. Now, a sign in front notes that the store is closed until further notice.
When employees arrived at work today they noticed that the doors to the business were still locked. Inside they could see the owner of the business bleeding. They called 911 saying that he had been shot.
"I would have been horrified," said Lynne Chambers who works next door. "It would have been very shocking to me...for anybody, whether it's a customer or an employee to come upon a scene like that."
Next door at Joann Fabrics, employees there remember seeing the well known business owner almost every day.
"He seemed, you know....just a gentle soul," said Chambers.
For family members, Thompson's death comes at a very difficult time.
"Dad died in December, right before Christmas," said Thompson. "Now it's two months later, three months later, my brother dies."
And while they sort out what to do with his well known business, they can't help but remember what they'll miss about a man that provided comfort to so many people.
"He was fun. He was fun," said Thompson.
Police are considering this a suspicious death investigation but at this point do tell us they are not ruling out the fact that his gunshot wound may have been self inflicted.
