Hundreds of fans gather to welcome the VCU Rams home

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - The VCU Rams are back in Richmond and they got a pleasant surprise when they returned to the Siegel Center.

About 200 Ram fans gathered at the Siegel Center to cheer on the team. Players signed autographs and took dozens of pictures.

There was plenty of cheering, despite Saturday nights loss against Butler. Ram fans chanted,  we love you and held signs that read, thank you.

It was a warm welcome filled with support and pride.

"We sent them off with a bang. They need to come back home to the same appreciation, " said Richmond resident Rick Mason.

Many heard about the informal, welcome back celebration by chance.

Nicole Bell: you got here super early -- they're not hear yet.

"We figured they'd be here eventually,"  said  Rams fan, Jane Arrington.

And when the Rams arrived the crowd went wild.

Nicole Bell: What do you guys want to say to all the folks who came out to support you?

"Thank you for the support we love you," said Ed Nixon.

"Coming back to Richmond, all this love---it's a lot of love,  true fans, " said Jamie Skeen.

"Not everybody could make it out to Houston, but it means a lot to have everybody here. Its been a great four years," said Joey Rodriguez.

"We did a great thing and we plan on continuing the success," said Heath Houston.

Fans like 12-year-old Courtney Mason says it's cool the Rams made it to the Final Four.

She wanted to see the superstars in person.

"They're cool. I like them - they're cute," said Mason.

Many of these fans say the team had a amazing run and that they're looking forward to following the Rams next season.

VCU is planning a public celebration later this week for the team.  Details are still being worked out.
