Record registration for the Monument Ave. 10K

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Ideal weather Saturday morning for the Ukrop's Monument Ave. 10K.  A record 41,314 registered for the race.

Racers were encouraged to wear black and gold for the race to support VCU in their game Saturday against Butler University in the NCAA Final Four.

Race organizers said Julius Kogo, age 25, of Kenya, took first place with a time of 29:02.  Second place finisher was Tesfaye Dube with a time of 29:07.

For the second consecutive year, Megan Wright, of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, was the top overall female finisher with a time of 33:12. Wright currently lives and trains in Morgantown, West Virginia.

Following closely behind her were Kenyans Hellen Jemutai with a time of 33:37 and Divina Jepkoegi finished with a time of 33:43.

33,000 people finished the 6.2 mile race.

The 2012 Ukrop's Monument Avenue 10k presented by MARTIN'S will take place on Saturday, March 31. Registration is scheduled to open on December 1, 2011.
