Cheap and free events

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Alison Brown learned the art of bargain hunting before her son Henry was born and perfected the craft as a new mother. She shared deals she'd find with other families via her blog which eventually morphed into

Alison believed the local market was under-served. Her site highlights quality sales and events that might not get much advertising otherwise. Richmond has a comprehensive list of the upcoming weekend's cheap and free events.

"Anything that sounds like fun and costs five dollars or less," Alison said.

She tries to make it easy for the consumer by consolidating information on the dozens of children's consignment sales in our area. It's a place you can also find all of the social group coupon sales in one place.

"There's so many of them these days that it can get overwhelming," she said.

Plus the random sales where you can find amazing prices.

"The Richmond public library book sale is this weekend. I'm excited about that one. It's one of my favorites, it's huge," Alison said.

Richmond will give you ideas your family can enjoy all year long. My family wanted to see the Picasso exhibit. Instead of paying $80 for everyone, this site gave me the idea to sign up for a family membership for $75. I saved $5, we'll get perks here all year long, plus it's considered a tax donation.

"A lot of people think it's too hard to save money, it's a lot of work. I go digging for it and I know it's a lot of work. If I can share that with somebody and save them some money, it makes my day," said Alison.

Richmond is adding a reference guide of helpful posts Alison has amassed over the years. Categories will include dining, shopping and children -- there's even a spot for out of town visitors.
