Buckingham County woman shot in back of head

Press release from Buckingham County Sheriff's Office

BUCKINGHAM, VA (WWBT) – On 3/29/11 at 6:43 p.m. the Buckingham County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call from a 48 year old female resident in the 4500 block of Melita Road, Arvonia. The female stated that she was shot in the back of the head by her 14 year old nephew. Deputies responded to the scene and subsequently arrested the juvenile after finding him outside the residence. Deputies tended to the victim until the Buckingham County Rescue Squad arrived and took over immediate care.

Due to the severity and area of the gunshot wound, rescue squad members requested that a medical helicopter transport the victim to the hospital. A temporary landing zone was established by the Arvonia Volunteer Fire Department and the victim was transported by air to the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville.

Juvenile petitions were obtained against the 14 year old male for violating Virginia Code 18.2-51 (Malicious Wounding) and 18.2-53 (shooting while Committing a Felony), both of which are felonies.

The juvenile was held and transported to Piedmont Juvenile Detention Center in Farmville pending a later court date. Sheriff William G. Kidd would like to note that the quick actions of all emergency services personnel averted what could have been a tragedy. The victim is expected to recover but it is unknown at this time if there will be any long term affects from the injury. The matter is still under investigation.
