Lucas to serve 50 years in prison for toddler's murder

HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - Kevin M. Lucas was formally sentenced to 50 years in prison Wednesday morning in a Henrico County courtroom in what essentially amounts to a life sentence.

In April 2010, 3-year-old Christianreid J.S. Stephens, died in the apartment of his mother, Maria Stephens, at the hands of her then-boyfriend, Lucas. Testimony revealed the boy's bruises were so awful, it was like he'd been in a boxing match.

Lucas, 46, was convicted of second-degree murder and felony child neglect in January. A Henrico jury took little more than an hour to return the maximum possible sentence.

After finding Lucas guilty of murder and child neglect, it took the jury just one more day to recommend the maximum sentence of 50 years.
