RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) – It was a sea of black and gold at the Siegel Center Wednesday afternoon, as the Rams headed out on a trip that could take them to the NCAA championship. The team got on the bus about 3:00, to the shouts and cheers of hundreds of fans who turned out for this afternoon's rally.
The first anxious fans arrived at 10:00 Wednesday morning.
"I didn't know how crowded it was going to be and I haven't been able to go to any of the other rallies so I'm really excited to be here," said fan Holly Guelig.
Kim Murphy even brought her son Josh.
"I snuck him out of school so he could witness history," she said.
By 2:00, the crowd had overtaken the Siegel Center parking lot. There were signs challenging the Bulldogs, and even chants of "We want Butler! We want Butler!"
Bobby Wright wore his "basketball best."
"My wife said I would never wear it and now nobody will not let me wear it. I've got my sister in law at home right now making me another one because this one's had it. It's had it. It doesn't stand up anymore it flops over," Wright said.
(Can you believe this?) "Yes I can believe it. I had faith from the beginning. They wanted this he said his senior year, they not ready to take off those jersey's yet so hey. I'm not ready for it to come off either," said Bridget Askew, VCU basketball starter and Henrico native Brandon Rozzell's mother.
Just before 3:00, the players finally walked out the doors. Fans couldn't contain themselves. Coach Shaka Smart got the loudest cheer of all. He gave high fives down the line. The fans gave him all the best wishes they could muster.
"It's all about this Ram-Nation. It's all about the love of this team. Cause they deserve it they earned it and we love them," one fan said.
There will be a watching party at the Siegel Center for VCU students and faculty on Saturday. All you need is a valid VCU ID to attend. The game starts at 6:09.
