Governor signs abortion regulations bill

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - The governor has signed legislation that makes Virginia the first state to require clinics that provide first-trimester abortions to meet the same standards as hospitals.

The State Board of Health will develop regulations, which will take effect January 1.

Opponents have said the new regulations could force as many as 17 of the state's 21 abortion clinics to close.
