RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) – It's a Sweet Sixteen celebration! The City of Richmond is throwing a party Wednesday to send the Spiders and the Rams to San Antonio for Round 16 in the NCAA. At 5 o'clock college basketball fans here in Richmond are encouraged to come out and participate in a pep rally as U of R and VCU get ready for their big games on Friday. It's been years since a city has had two teams still in this round.
"This is a momentous occasion," said organizer, Alexander Dahm with Venture Richmond. "This is the sort of thing that doesn't happen every day and it's a time for Richmond and the Richmond community to celebrate!"
And celebrate they will! We ran into fans who were more than excited to see two Richmond teams go so far in the tournament!
"It builds character and everything within the Commonwealth as well as it brings excitement and the fans love it!" said fan, Rashaun Davis.
"Who doesn't love getting involved in college sports?" said fan, Jacob Wagner.
The presidents of both universities are going to be brought in dramatically by decorated boats into the canal. Venture Richmond is expecting a huge crowd.
"We hope to pack this area down here and I don't think that's going to be very difficult!" said Dahm. "The city's been a-buzz with excitement ever since both U of R and VCU made the Sweet Sixteen.
While making it in the Sweet Sixteen is big news itself, VCU and U of R's teams are making history. Richmond has become the first city since L.A. in 2007 to send two teams to Round 16. It's the fourth time ever in history. The celebration will take place by the turning basin along the Canal Walk in Shockoe Bottom. NCAA fans all over the city are encouraged to come out and show their spirit.
