RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - The City of Richmond became the first city since 2007 to have the men's basketball teams of two universities within its jurisdictional limits reach the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament.
To celebrate the University of Richmond and Virginia Commonwealth University's success and root our city's home teams to victory, a community "Downtown Pep Rally" will be held at the Canal Turning Basin along the City's historic Canal Walk, on Wednesday, March 23 at 5 p.m.
The presidents of both universities are scheduled to make remarks and there will be free t-shirts for the first 500 attendees.
VCU students are also invited to send their team off Wednesday afternoon. The pep rally starts at 1:30 p.m. and fans can gather in the U-U lot on the west side of the Siegel Center.
Some lucky fans may also make the trip to San Antonio. VCU is holding a lottery for students, including game tickets and bus transportation.
There is also a send-off rally for UR at the Robins Center 4:15 p.m. Wednesday. Sweet 16 t-shirts have arrived and there is a trip lottery, with UR raffling off 50 tickets for students to take bus to San Antonio.
