CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - Some new details are emerging about a bizarre, deadly accident in Chesterfield.
The teen accused of killing two people after allegedly driving drunk and going the wrong way on the Powhite Parkway was in court Monday.
The judge said she isn't afraid the 17-year-old will skip town, but based on what she heard from attorneys, she doesn't think there are enough safeguards in his parent's home to make sure the teen doesn't pose a threat to the public yet again.
There were disturbing new details from Monday's court hearing, according to the Commonwealth's attorney. The 17-year-old driver charged in this tragic crash that claimed the life of these two men got his alcohol at home. He told troopers he had taken five to seven tequila shots while hanging out with friends at his parent's house and then headed to his girlfriend's home.
We're told he was on the phone with her when he was allegedly driving the wrong direction on the Powhite Parkway. While authorities tried to catch up with him, two cruisers had to dodge the vehicle. They were too late. Both Imad Elamwar and Sammer Ballout died at the scene.
The 17-year-old wasn't supposed to be driving. He didn't even have a license. We've learned he repeatedly told troopers he was intoxicated at the scene and when they took him to the hospital, they learned more about just how drunk the teen might have been. According to testimony, he didn't know he had been in an accident and asked troopers if he hit someone.
The teen remains in the Chesterfield Juvenile Detention Center. While he was in court, the families of the two victims were remembering their loved ones at a joint service.
