RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - One student was arrested and another left bloody after a fight broke out at Huguenot High School this afternoon.
A student used a steak knife to stab another student in the cafeteria.
One of the students was arrested for aggravated assault and Huguenot High School was on lockdown for nearly two hours. The school will now have extra security on hand during lunch hours for the rest of the week.
"I was just like, 'oh my gosh, girl what is going on?'," said a senior girl that walked into the cafeteria during the fight. She asked not to be named. "So we just stop and see this guy with no shirt on swinging everywhere, hitting the principal, almost knocked a security lady over. She's stumbling into a wall. I mean he's just going ballistic."
She says the injured student was cut several times in the neck, head and face, and the aftermath of the fight was gory.
"You just saw blood, just oozing," she said. "You saw it on the floor. You saw little drips. There's just blood everywhere."
Felicia Cosby of Richmond Public Schools says there will now be extra security guards during lunch periods for the rest of the week to make sure there's not a repeat of today's fight.
"That's something we do not tolerate," Cosby said. "It cannot be tolerated and this is not the place for it. We want our kids to come here and be safe."
Students say fighting doesn't happen often at Huguenot High School but that has started to change this semester.
"We've been having a lot of fights lately, a lot, a lot of fights," a student said. "It's just been really, really crazy."
The student injured in the fight was not arrested but police say the fight is still under investigation.
