Criminal assault charge dropped against Richmond deputy

Press release from Richmond City Sheriff's Office

RICHMOND, VA - Sheriff C.T. Woody, Jr. reported that a pending criminal charge against a Richmond City Sheriff's Deputy was dismissed today in Richmond Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court.

On March 13, Lieutenant Colonel Joel Lawson, 51, was arrested by the Richmond Police Department after a warrant was obtained by his spouse for domestic assault.

The charge was dismissed today following a trial on the merits before Judge Thomas O. Jones.

"I am glad this charge against a member of my staff has been resolved. Now that the case is over, both of the individuals involved can now begin to put this behind them and move forward with their lives," said Sheriff Woody.

This case has been dismissed by a court of law and no additional comments will be made by the Sheriff or his staff.
