Driver of car that ran off Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel identified

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA (WWBT, AP) - Authorities have identified a woman who was killed when her car ran off the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel and plunged into the water.

Virginia Beach police say the body of Jean Calcagno, 51, of Virginia Beach was recovered from the car Tuesday. Searchers using sonar found the vehicle between 10:15 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The Coast Guard says there were initial reports that two people were in the car when it went off the bridge-tunnel Tuesday morning at around 9 a.m. near the 8-mile post. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge Police later determined the woman was the only person in the car.

Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel police said that about 10 to 20 feet of guardrail on the bridge's left side was damaged.

The accident remains under investigation by the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Police and Virginia Beach police.
