RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - It must seem like forever since L.C. Bird suited up for the first time, way back on December 6th against Thomas Dale. 28 games later, the Skyhawks played their final game of the season, and it wound up being a heartbreaking loss.
The Skyhawks fell to reigning state champion I.C. Norcom 54-45 at the Siegel Center Friday night in the Class AAA state champion game.
Bird held a six point lead in the first half, and held a two point lead at the break. But Dorian Finney-Smith, the future Hokie, keyed the Greyhounds on a big run to start the third quarter. The Skyhawks managed just 17 second half points.
Finney-Smith scored 12 points in the second half and helped the nationally ranked Greyhounds (30-1) pull away in the fourth quarter. He was 10 for 10 from the foul line, and had 19 points and 17 rebounds.
Christian Smith had 16 points and Robert Johnson added 10 for L.C. Bird. Decarlos Anderson added 12 points for Norcom.
Bird was trying to win its first state championship ever in boys basketball.
