PRESS RELEASE FROM CHESTERFIELD POLICE:
CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA – A Chesterfield County resident was arrested after he led police on a high-speed pursuit in Henrico and Chesterfield counties.
Police said that Mitchell W. Kessinger, of the 3400 block of Ludgate Road, failed to stop for the Virginia State Police on Route 288 in Henrico County. State Police pursued Kessinger on Route 288 into Chesterfield County until they lost sight of Kessinger's vehicle.
The vehicle was located a short time later on Route 288 near Route 10 by a Chesterfield County Police officer, but the driver did not stop for the officer when signaled to do so. A brief pursuit ensued, but the officer lost sight of the suspect vehicle.
The Richmond Metro Aviation Unit alerted officers to a possible sighting of the suspect vehicle on northbound Interstate 95, near Willis Road. A Chesterfield County Police officer near that location confirmed that the vehicle was Kessinger's. When the officer activated his emergency lights and sirens, the vehicle accelerated to a high rate of speed. A short pursuit took place that ended when Kessinger crashed his 2011 Mustang GT into a bridge column on I-95 north at Chippenham Parkway.
Kessinger was injured in the crash and transported to VCU Medical Center in critical condition. He has been charged with driving under the influence. The investigation is ongoing and other charges are pending.
