RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Hundreds are dead after a quake triggered massive tsunamis, fires and major damage.

Tsunami warnings are in effect for many countries, and even the entire west coast of the United States.

The 8.9 magnitude quake hit Sendai, Japan right in the middle of the day.

People tried to run for cover as buildings shook. The quake even rocked the nation's Parliament.

Tsunami warnings were issued for Japan after the quake and before long a massive 13 foot wave reached land.

Cars, boats, even buildings were carried away by the wave, even one airport was completely surrounded by water.

After the quake there were also major fires, including a oil refinery, steel mill and nuclear power plant. There have been no reports of radioactive leaks.

The quake was also felt in Tokyo. That's about two and a half hour car drive from the epicenter.

Troops have been deployed to the area hit by the quake to join relief operations.

This is the worst earthquake to hit Japan since 1995.
