Deadly fire in Cumberland County under investigation

CUMBERLAND, VA - Virginia State Police and the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office are investigating the cause and origin of a fatal fire in Cumberland.

At approximately 10 p.m. Wednesday (March 9, 2011), the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office received a report of a fire in a storage building behind a residence on Trents Lane off of Route 13. The Cumberland Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene and extinguished the fire. Once the fire was out, the remains of an unidentified male were located within the burned structure.

An arson investigator with the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation's Appomattox Field Office responded to the scene at the request of the sheriff's office.

The remains were transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Richmond for autopsy and identification.

The incident remains under investigation at this time. Investigators do not suspect foul play was involved in the fire.
