RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Police are investigating an unusual situation on the city's north side. Witnesses say a man with a pump action shotgun robbed someone Wednesday morning.
This happened around 7:45 a.m. in the 3300 block of Garland and another similar incident happened 45 minutes later on the corner of Monteiro and Poe.
Anthony Lewis was wrapping up his shift just before 8:00 a.m. Wednesday, when police arrived on his block. Witnesses called police after seeing a man confront someone on the street with a pump action shotgun.
"That time of the day everybody is getting up for work or going to school. I don't know, just sounds bizarre to me," he said.
Police say they initially thought it was a robbery but no victim was there when officers showed up. Police are now calling this a suspicious situation.
Witnesses say a van pulled up on Garland Avenue and a man jumped out of the van with a shotgun. Immediately, the person being robbed put their hands in the air.
Some of the people we spoke to today say they're afraid to go on camera because they fear they may be targeted next.
A similar and possibly related incident happened 45 minutes later about a mile away at the corner of Monteiro and Poe in Barton Heights. Police say a man matching the description of the man seen off Garland was seen there with a shotgun too.
Elijah Parker has worked in this area for several years. He says 8:00 a.m. is not a common time for crime.
"People with criminal minds are going to pick the best time to prey upon people," he said. "We might not think so, but they're thinking a different way."
Police only have a vague description of the suspect. So far there have been no arrests.
