HENRICO, VA (WWBT) – Henrico County didn't have to look very far to find its next police chief.
Following a national search, County Manager Virgil Hazelett announced today that Lt. Col. Doug Middleton, the deputy chief of police, will be promoted to chief, effective April 9.
Middleton will succeed Col. Henry Stanley, who announced his forthcoming retirement earlier this year.
Middleton, who was chosen from a field of 37 candidates from 18 states, started with Henrico Police as an officer in 1972, and rose through the ranks to his current position.
In a statement, Hazelett said, "Dep. Chief Middleton has had a long and impressive career in Henrico. He is a strong leader and communicator and readily accepts challenges. I look forward to him continuing his dedication and service to Henrico County as our chief of police."
Col. Stanley will retire after serving nearly half a century with Henrico Police.
